The evolution of pre-school aged Dora into Tween Dora has caused a lot of hype. Personally, I don’t mind the updated and stylish look of the Tween Dora. I think she’s pretty cute and certainly not overly sexy nor is she baring any belly like a Bratz doll. My almost 4 year old daughter wears leggings and swing tops regularly so this look fits in my opinion. Mattel and Nickelodeon suggest the old Dora will still be around for the pre-school set and that this new Dora is geared to the girls 5+ who are aging up so they can continue with the franchise.
My understanding is that the Tween Dora will be released this fall in a line of toys called “Dora’s Explorer Girls” and the cornerstone of the collection will be a Dora Links doll that will have an online game component as she will hook up to your PC. The price point I saw in my online research was about $60, but I’ve yet to receive any official press release or review samples on the product myself.
Mattel & Nickelodeon executives say the following, “As tweenage Dora, our heroine has moved to the big city, attends middle school and has a whole new fashionable look. What’s more, she now has a rich online world in which girls can explore, play games, customize, and most importantly solve mysteries with Dora and her new friends.” (Via
