Tis the season to be merry! With all these holiday lights and decorations, we also can’t forget about the safety of our home – especially those home that have little curious tykes running around in them. Below are some holiday safety tips for all those decorations! We’ve also got a $200 Best Buy Gift Card giveaway thanks to the “Safe & Bright Blogger Network” that Classy Mommy voluntarily joined to help promote safety at home. (Entry details at bottom of article)

The “Safe and Bright Blogger Network” is a partnership with Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a safety certification company that has been testing, verifying and inspecting products for over 115 years. You may already know us– the UL Mark can be found on all kinds of everyday products to certify that they have been tested, inspected and verified for safety. In fact, the average home has more than 128 products with the UL Mark on them.
Here’s some holiday decorating safety tips from UL.
Old decorations: check them twice
The holidays just wouldn’t be the same without the great old decorations and the traditions around them:
•The revolving disco star for the top of the tree
•Bubble lights
•The “frosted” tree
•The plastic elf from the 50s
Amidst the flurry of the season and the fun of all the decorations, don’t forget to stay safe. Here are a few tips:
Check your lights, check them twice
Inspect all of your electric lights and decorations for damage or wear. Cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections may pose a fire or shock hazard.
Know your lights and cords
Do not connect more than three miniature light strings together. Also, be sure to check the rating on your extension cords and do not plug in more than the recommended wattage.
Decorate with a safe eye
Cords should not be run under carpets or tacked-up with metal nails or staples. Small decorations can be choking hazards so keep them out of the reach of toddlers.

Terminate the tinsel
Tinsel can be a choking hazard to small children and animals, especially cats who love the shine. Older tinsel made prior to 1972 can also contain lead. Best to be safe and keep it away.

Use candles with care
Keep candles away from items that easily catch fire, such as decorations, window treatments and paper. Also, be sure candles are kept far from children’s reach and are extinguished any time you leave the room.
