Rice Krispies: Childhood is Calling
Rice Krispies has partnersed with a non profit to form an initiative called Operation Spark which provides insights and advice about how to strengthen the family connection and turn everyday moments into quality time. We all know kids grow up so fast and we need to remember to relish every moment! I know I sometimes feel like my life is total chaos - but I try to step back, soak in all the craziness, and just love it as I know that in just a few years these babies won't be babies anymore! The website has some great games you can play together with your children - even appropriate for the 2-3 year olds - Kenzie and I often "waste time" sitting together surfing the net and playing games on Nick Jr or watching You Tube videos - so this is a fun activity. Tons of tips on "real time" play at home too!

read comments"A Plumm Summer" Playing Now!

I've heard rave reviews of A Plumm Summer as it appeals to the entire family. I can't wait to see it! Stacy Debroff from Mom Central said that,"it was amazing to see every member of my family truly engaged in its wonderful story. In fact, I'm not sure we have all agreed on any movie in the last 2 years of movie rentals and here were my kids, ages 13 and 15, watching a film I thought would be geared just for younger kids and hugging us at the movie's end. Then our entire staff watched it over lunch, and everyone agreed: what a great throwback to the family classics such as Sound of Music or It's a Wonderful Life."
It's often tough for independent films like A Plumm Summer to reach big theaters nationwide. A successful first two weekends for A Plumm Summer means that more families will have a chance to see the film in more locations and most importantly, Hollywood will hopefully take notice and start to invest time and money into making quality films with stories that appeal to families.
Winner of the Audience Best Film Award at the International Family Film Festival, A Plumm Summer is based on a true story in Montana in the 1960's, where well-loved local TV legend and puppet, FroggyDoo, gets stolen during a live show. The families of Montana outcry at FroggyDoo's loss prompts an FBI investigation, but the children of Peaks View take the mystery into their own hands and it's a race to unravel the mystery (hint: those FBI agents are slow to catch on...)! A Plumm Summer features celebrated actors, Henry Winkler, Billy Baldwin, Jeff Daniels and Brenda Strong (from Desperate Housewives) as well as talented, up-and-coming child actors, all of whom transport you to their small town where themes of friendship and family become interwoven in this amazing little movie.
The movie opened the weekend of April 25, 26, and 27, and will also be playing this upcoming weekend in these 4 areas:
• California: LA and surrounding areas
• Alabama: Birmingham, Trussville
• Minnesota: Oakdale, Lakeville, Eagan
• Montana: Billings, Bozeman, Kalispel, Livingston or Missoula
More available theaters are updated daily so be sure to check the "A Plumm Summer website" for a complete list of theaters in your area.

Avent Baby Bottles Product Materials Chart
For instance, the recycle symbol # 7 means a product is made of Polycarbonate plastic. And polycarbonate plastics contain BPA - incidentally, the very popular Avent bottle is a #7. With my now 2 1/2 year old daughter we used these popular AVENT bottles by Philips. Tons of my friends also used these as they were just right for switching between breastfeeding and bottles.
Here is a a chart detailing the product materials in Avent Baby Bottles and sippy cups. Note that polycarbonate and a recycle #7 symbol means that the product has BPA in it. Wherease, polypropylene is considered a bpa free and safer plastic.

read commentsCelebrity Moms Give Back: Trista Sutter talks with Classy Mommy

Classy Mommy: It is wonderful to hear all you are doing for the environment. What advice do you have for Moms hoping to live a cleaner and greener lifestyle?
Check out the Green Nest website. Ryan & I used this and found it a very helpful resource as we strive to create a healthy and safe home for our family. After having Max, the environment has become an even bigger concern for us, as we want to insure we have a healthy world for Max to grow up in.
Classy Mommy: What charities and organizations are important to you?
Ryan and I have both been involved with this wonderful local charity called First Descents, a camp which gives young adult cancer patients a place to go kayaking and get outdoors together in Colorado.
Since Ryan is a tri-athlete, we’ve also been involved with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which helps people with physical disabilities, like amputees; pursue an active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive athletics.
We know the director at Future of Life. This charity is very important to us as preserving the environment is a big priority in our lives. Basically, Future of Life helps ensure there is a future of life on earth for all species. They do this by establishing programs that educate and encourage people to take action.
Classy Mommy: Are there any other charities you hope to work with in the future?
The March of Dimes. Max was a premature baby and a few of my closest friends have children who were either premature, or have conditions such as Down Syndrome. I also worked as a Pediatric Physical therapist for 4 years and know how difficult it can be to deal with developmental delays. The March of Dimes really makes a difference and because of that, I am trying to get more involved.
Classy Mommy: I love your new line of Trista Baby eco-conscious diaper bags. What is your role with the company? When eBags approached me about creating my own line, I knew this was the perfect fit as it would allow me to be a full time stay at home Mom for Max. It also allows me to use my creativity to design unique patterns, styles, and accessories.
Classy Mommy: Any plans to introduce more eco-friendly baby products in the Trista Baby line? We’ll be sticking with diaper bags for now, but we hope to expand the line with a variety of bags – everything from new diaper bag silhouettes, handbags, luggage, and children’s accessories.
Classy Mommy: I was thrilled to review your Trista Baby bag and add it to our Classy Mommy Product Finder. Do you have any finds for me?
I’ve got a few picks you totally need to add! http://www.cloudsandstars.com/ makes a quick zip sheet that changed my life. I could not live without it! Basically it is a sheet where you can just zip off the top of the sheet to change it without worrying about removing your bumper or lifting out the entire crib mattress. I’m also a huge fan of How Fast They Grow, a fabulous digital scrap booking web service that helps Moms easily create beautiful scrapbook pages. Many of my favorite products in Max’s nursery came from NewArrivalsInc. which specializes in custom bedding, accessories, and designer nurseries. I also rave about my rocker from Angel Song. They make custom baby chairs that are down-filled and comfy!
Classy Mommy: I know Max is still really young – but how do you hope to instill core values about caring for others and the environment in Max and his future siblings? Children are such sponges. They learn anything and everything from their parents and the people who surround them. My hope is that Ryan and I can be the kind of people that Max will want to be like. The best way to ensure that he is a caring, kind, considerate person is to show him by example, and we intend to do that to the best of our ability.

Obama, Hilary, and McCain all want more vaccine research....
Looks like Kirby attended a recent top-level meeting in Washington where vaccine safety officials discussed the potential issues with vaccines (ie autism links, crowded schedule, etc. )
Kirby's article said the below questions/topics were added to the CDC's recommended Federal Research Agenda for vaccine safety.
Can vaccines cause neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism?
Can vaccines in children with mitochondrial dysfunction cause significant "neurological deterioration?"
Can the combination live-virus measles, mumps and rubella vaccine cause seizures and long term damage in children?
Can vaccines cause autoimmune disease?
Can thimerosal cause tics or Tourette syndrome?
Can attenuated viruses in vaccines cause asthma in children?
Just wish all this research was done already so I'd know just what to think about vaccinating my little boy. Right now I'm taking the alternative vaccine schedule from Dr. Sears as a precautionary approach.

Classy Mommy Interviews Christopher Gavigan, author of Healthy Child, Healthy World.
Classy Mommy loved his new book as it shares insights packaged with easy tips about how to live a cleaner and greener life in our very own homes. I especially like how each chapter focuses on specific topics - from cleaning agents, skincare items, organic foods, pregnancy, etc. sharing solutions and tips on how we can avoid potentially harmful chemicals to better protect both ourselves, our children, and our environment. This format will enable readers to quickly use this book again and again as a wonderful reference book and resource.
Classy Mommy: I find having children inspires many Moms & Dads to better themselves as we all want to be role models for our kids and make the world a better place for them to grow up in. As CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World and by publishing this book you are certainly doing your part already! As a new Daddy, how has your perspective on giving back changed since the birth of your son Luke?
That’s exactly right – parents need to be effective, honest, inspired role models, and I’m hopeful this book will have some impact on parents in my generation and everyone who loves children. My philosophy, which I hope Luke will understand and support, is that the more you give, the more you get – so giving back has always been something I feel is important for me, no matter what.
Classy Mommy: What is the easiest way to create a non-toxic nursery environment? (organic crib mattress, organic bedding, safe paint, no carpet etc.)
Realize it’s not about buying “the stuff”. Yes, we all need to purchase more wisely, know the companies, and buy cleaner, greener, and less toxic products. But this is not only about green consumerism. It’s about simplifying and lightening our load. You can improve your home’s health by taking off your shoes – tracking in 80% less dirt, grime, pesticides, resides, and less-than pleasant particulate matter. Opening your windows – a simple action that doesn’t require a wallet, but that does a world of good.
Organic crib mattresses are wonderful, since babies are sleeping about 14 hours a day on average. When creating your nursery, use paints with little or no VOCs and try to eliminate the carpeting, which also are know to off-gas chemicals that can affect indoor air quality.
Classy Mommy: The BPA in baby bottles has received a lot of buzz recently. I’m making “safer” choices for my 4 month old son today as I didn’t know about many of these issues when my 2 year old daughter was an infant. What other potentially harmful chemicals in baby products, baby foods, and vaccinations do you think need to be brought to the public’s attention so parents can make smarter choices?
3 big ones: Check these websites for more info too.
Flame Retardants: PBDE’s http://healthychild.org/resources/chemical/polybrominated_diphenyl_ether
Parabens: http://healthychild.org/resources/chemical/parabens
Phthalates http://healthychild.org/resources/chemical/phthalates
Classy Mommy: What ingredients in household cleaning agents and laundry detergents should Parents try to avoid?
Use gentle castile soap and water - these have been shown to keep surfaces as free of bacteria as antibacterial soaps do. In fact, antibacterial soaps and disposable wipes have not proven any more effective than regular soap in preventing infections among average consumers, but raise significant concerns about developing resistant bacteria. Also, triclosan commonly used in antibacterial product may be problematic.
Buy Safer Cleaning Products - many local, online, and discount stores carry cleaning and home products that are very effective without harsh chemicals or fumes. Or make your own safer cleaning products with typical household products .
Look for with safer ingredients – cleaning products labeled nontoxic, bio-based, chlorine-free, organic, phosphate-free, natural fragrance, and/or biodegradable. Learn to read a label.
Reduce the need for anti-bacterial soaps by frequently requiring hand washing.
Classy Mommy: Skin and hair care labels can be very confusing to read. Any advice on reading these labels to minimize exposure? Particularly when it comes to parabens or other potential “endocrine” disruptors as it seems like this is a big deal for developing children.
You are right labels are difficult – but if you spend time looking and learning key words, it’s easier than you think. To start, look for products made of organic botanical oils, paraben-free, preservative-free, petroleum-free, and vegetable-derived surfactants.
Avoid body care products with toxic synthetic preservatives (parabens), petroleum-based ingredients, sodium lauryl and laureth sulfates -1,4-Dioxane, synthetic fragrances and artificial colors, formaldehyde donors and other proven harmful chemicals.
Here is a great resource for kid’s personal care items:
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/parentsguide
Classy Mommy: What are your plans for the future?
To love and support my family everyday and in everyway.
Classy Mommy: Luke is still young – but how do you hope to instill core values about caring for the environment in him?
The birth of Luke has further galvanized my commitment to help educate the public and do every bit I can to empower individuals to realize that their actions affect others – we are all part of this larger earth system – it’s not out there – and we can improve our behaviors to lighten our impacts on these systems for the benefit of future generation’s well-being and health.

Latest News on BPA in Baby Bottles.....
Congress is asking the FDA to reconsider if BPA is safe. This move is prompted by a new report by the National Toxicology Center, part of the National Institutes of Health, which says "even low levels of exposure by infants can cause changes in their prostate and mammary gland tissue, which could ultimately lead to cancer."
I saw the above info in an article in the Wall Street Journal Online titled, "Plastics Chemical Spurs Concern: Government Study, In Reversal, Links BPA, Cancer Risk" By ALICIA MUNDY and dated 4/16/08.

read commentsBaby Einstein Saves the Day!

Kyle had his 4 month shots yesterday. Uggh. And much to my dismay - even despite my efforts to split up the round of shots into 2 visits to minimize his bad reaction - he was a total wreck. Blood curdling screaming that could not be soothed for 2 hours. Finally, I thought maybe I could try a Baby Einstein to calm him. What do you know? It did just the trick.
So thanks to Disney for sending me the recently released, "Baby’s First Sounds: Discoveries for Little Ears" to review! This dvd totally calmed, soothed and mesmorized my little bundle. He watched it 2 x in a row, and then fell asleep in his bouncer. Baby’s First Sounds introduces common first sounds along with introducing many languages from around the world. The first time we played it a few days ago, I thought I had hit Spanish or French mode!

April DVD Round Up!

Go Diego Go! Moonlight Rescue - We are huge fans of Diego. 2 year old Mackenzie spends hours role playing as Alicia and Daddy or I pretend to be Diego as we rescue animals all throughout our house. We think Diego DVD's are super ways to learn about animals from around the world like Leatherback Sea Turtles, Pumas, Tree Frogs, and more!
Super Why! - The animated PBS KID show is from one of the creators and visionaries behind Blue’s Clues. Mackenzie loves this series! It’s terrific and it’s all about inspiring a lifelong interest in and love for books among budding “Super Readers.” And it is available for the first time on DVD! ShopPBS.org for $14.99
Alvin and the Chipmunks: World Adventure & Alvin and the Chipmunks: Funny, We Shrunk the Parents - Mackenzie and I recently watched the just released Alvin and the Chipmunks Great Adventure (1987)on dvd. What a blast from the past! I remember loving Alvin and his pals when I was a little girl and it was so much fun to watch and especially hear Alvin's cute quirky voice once again. Classy Mommy is currently giving away a bunch of these DVDS!
Hip Hop Harry: Move Those Feet - If your kids wanna be hipsters and like moving to the beat, the adorable yellow bear Hip Hop Harry, will teach them some dance steps in this release. My daughter adored it as she loves moving to the rhythm. Mom was a little less crazy about it as I don't want her turning into Vanilla Ice - but I love that Hip Hop Harry had her moving and grooving so it's all right with me!
Cloverfield - This movie, produced by J.J. Abrams is a pick for the Parents. We just watched it on Saturday for our "date" night movie at home. Only 82 minutes long so just right for the limited time in our schedules! We thought Cloverfield was a cross between War of the Worlds and the Blair Witch project. Frightening stuff!

Classy Mommy Interview: Dr. Sears on The Vaccine Book
Classy Mommy’s snapshot of The Vaccine Book:
As a Mom of a 2 year old and 3 month old, I loved The Vaccine Book. I found your writing style and research easy to digest. As a former pharmaceutical sales rep, I really appreciated your comprehensive research into the Product Inserts for each vaccine and your breakdown of each vaccine by brand to show the differences in ingredients dependent upon the manufacturer of each shot. That info coupled with your discussion on what ingredients could be controversial enables parents to draw their own conclusions about each vaccine so they can make the best decision for their children.
As a parent researching information on vaccines, I find the information available is at opposite ends of the spectrum – either 100% pro-vaccine per the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule or 100% anti-vaccine from medical experts on the fringe. Your book is the first resource out there that I’ve come across that is pro-vaccine, yet addresses the concept of a potentially “safer” alternative vaccine schedule for our children.
Classy Mommy: The Vaccine Book made a VERY compelling case for an alternative safe vaccine schedule. In your opinion why do you think more pediatricians do not share a similar concern?
Most pediatricians don’t have the time to research vaccines in detail on their own, which is very understandable. They simply must rely on the medical associations and policy makers to do the research for them and pass on general medical policies (such as the vaccine schedule) to them. So most doctors have never even heard the information that has led me to create a safer vaccine schedule because we aren’t taught about many of the potential problems with vaccines in medical school. It was my particular interest in vaccines that led me to do extensive research this on my own and come up with my alternative schedule. My schedule only gives two shots at a time, delays certain vaccines that aren’t needed in the first year, and spreads the shots out over several years instead of grouping all the infant vaccines into the first 18 months of life. My schedule does get children fully vaccinated eventually, it simply does so in a more logical manner that minimizes reactions and maximizes safety by not overloading young infants with so many chemicals all at once.
Classy Mommy: Do you think the recent, yet somewhat limited buzz about the case of Hannah Polling, might cause the medical community to start asking questions and researching the potential safety and side-effects of a 12 lb baby or an 18 month old toddler receiving “too many” vaccines simultaneously?
Actually, no. The American Academy of Pediatrics has already issued a statement regarding this matter that will probably sweep the issue under the carpet in most doctors’ minds. The AAP and the government have presented this case as an isolated occurrence due to Hannah’s underlying mitochondrial disorder that should almost never occur within the general population of children. However, I agree that at least some doctors will likely be more careful in the future with child who is behind on vaccines and not suddenly load them up with so many at once. That’s what happens to Hannah – she missed her 12 and 15 month shots, and so at the 18 month checkup the doctor gave her 6 months worth of shots all at once. Parents should also realize that Hannah’s shots had a lot of mercury back then, which isn’t the case today. So it is fair to say that children today don’t share all the same risks with vaccines that kids did prior to 2002 when mercury was still present.
Classy Mommy: Personally, after reading your book, I feel strongly about separating the MMR and Chicken Pox shots for my new baby boy. I understand pediatricians seem willing to support an “alternative vaccine schedule” except when it comes to the separation of the MMR and Chicken Pox vaccines.
What is the root cause of the reluctance of pediatricians to separate the MMR vaccine? (Is it the vaccine manufacturer, physician convenience, misinformation, economics and cost or a combination of all of the above?)
There are several issues here. First, the supply of the separated MMR vaccines has fluctuated over the years. Some shot supplies have been all used up and not available for as long as a year or more. So some doctors have it in their mind that these shots aren’t made anymore, so they won’t even try to order them. But overall, they are usually available; it just takes a little more effort. The biggest factor, however, is that doctors can only order these separate shots in 10-dose boxes. So they must have nine other patients who also want the separated MMR in order to provide them. Hopefully as more and more doctors get such a request from enough patients they will begin offering this alternative. It shouldn’t have anything to do with cost, since I’ve had no problems having insurance companies pay for the separate shots.
Classy Mommy: Families have likely invested many hours building a relationship and comfort zone with their pediatrician. The last thing they may want to do is find a brand new practice and start from scratch. If your medical practice seems unwilling to split the MMR vaccine, what recommendations do you have for parents who wish to separate the MMR and Chicken Pox vaccines?
If a family really wants to stay with their pediatrician, I suggest you simply continue to refuse the MMR shot. You can proceed with the Chickenpox shot at any time, since it is a separate vaccine. This gives you the opportunity to remind your doctor at each checkup that you are waiting for him to provide the separate shots. Since Measles, Mumps, and Rubella are so rare, I feel it is fairly safe to leave your child unprotected for a few years. You can always go ahead with the full MMR around age 4 which I feel is a safe age to get the full vaccine. Even in states with mandatory vaccine laws, parents can still usually delay the MMR this long.
Classy Mommy: The Vaccine Book and your blog are certainly doing their part to generate conversations about a safer approach to vaccinations. How do you think Moms like me can mobilize either on the Internet or within our own communities to make the Medical community more receptive to a suggested alternative vaccine schedule?
Write letters and opinion articles to as many newspapers and web news sources as you can. Get your friends and family involved. Another great way is for anyone who has a doctor who is friendly toward these ideas, as the doctor to email me through my website and ask to be put on my “Vaccine Friendly Doctor’s List”. This is a registry (by state) of doctors who will offer patients some alternatives and even welcome patients to choose to not vaccinate.
Classy Mommy: What do you say to the common, everyday parents who are trying desperately to find unbiased and clear answers to the question, “Should I vaccinate my child?”
As a pediatrician, I get asked this question everyday. In the old days, patients just did whatever the doctor ordered, no questions (or at least, not too many questions) asked. But when it comes to vaccines, giving parents a quick and easy “I think vaccines are safe and you really need to vaccinate your child” answer just doesn’t work. Parents want to know more. What are the possible side effects? What is the risk of catching a severe case of the diseases? Is mercury still in some vaccines? What other ingredients are in the shots? Do vaccines cause autism? Is it safe to give so many shots simultaneously? There’s no short answer to these and the myriad of other questions that parents have. The problem is, doctors only have about 15 minutes to spend with you at your baby’s checkup. This is just enough time to do an exam and answer some basic questions about feeding, development, and behavior. If you try to throw in a dozen vaccine questions at the end of your visit, do you really think you’ll get some open and thorough answers? Probably not.
Classy Mommy: So how can parents get complete and unhurried vaccine answers without getting kicked out of the doctor’s office?
Here’s what I do in my office. I ask parents to make a separate vaccine consultation appointment on a day separate from any checkup. Or I ask them to book a double appointment for their next checkup. If shots are due right then, I defer them until after we’ve had a chance to talk more. This way I can sit and listen to the parents’ concerns without feeling rushed, and give them the complete answers they deserve so they can make an educated decision about vaccines.
You have to do your part by not only making the separate appointment, but by thoroughly researching these issues ahead of time so you are well prepared. If your doctor senses you are already well educated on vaccines and their diseases, you’ll have a far more fruitful and mutually respectful conversation. By doing your homework and giving your doctor the time he or she needs, together you can develop a vaccine plan that you are both comfortable with. And you won’t find yourself out on the street looking for a new pediatrician.

Our dinner was relaxing after a information packed day. Highlights included: learning how to get our babes to sleep from Dr. Jodi Mindell, sleep expert and author; talking about what Moms want to know about J&J's products (parabens was a hot topic), a talk from the famous Dr. Germ, and learning about some of the latest Mommy trends from Baby Center's Tina Sharkey. These trends included GREEN GREEN GREEN & Pregnant Belly Tattoos!
I also had the chance to meet so many amazing blogging Mommies. Just a few more notables whom I met by chance dining encounters near the end of my trip included: Melinda Roberts, from Wonderbelly.com, Leslie Morgan Steiner, author of the Mommy Wars, and Devra Renner & Aviva Pflock co-authors of Mommy Guilt.

Thanks again to J&J for sponsoring this exciting networking event. Hopefully, we will continue the relationship as it seems this back to basics 2 way conversation and sharing of ideas will best benefit both the company & the customers.

Johnsons's Camp Baby Day 1 Wrap Up....

Ted's got a blog too so we were able to dish on that and give him an intro to Twitter. Now we're all hoping he'll link to some 55 Mommy blogs to please this Mom Target audience... he just might as we all know how influential us Moms can be in the blogosphere! Even cooler - I've finally been able to connect live with some amazing bloggers. I'm loving my new friends and hoping we'll be able to spend more time together again at another event or trade show soon! Just a few of the cool ladies I've gotten to bond with include:
Amy from Ladybug and Blogging Mama ( her daughter and my daughter were both born within 24 hours of each other - and both were 1 month early!) Jody from Moms Favorite Stuff , Jane from Pinks and Blues, Amy Clark from Mom Advice, Jamie from Blonde Mom Blog, Stephanie from About.com, Christine From Dates to Diapers and Beyond, and the energetic and kindred spirit so many of us Moms love, Stacy Debroff of Mom Central fame!
Day 2 should be awesome too..... my friend Erik is the Brand Manager for Purell and he says they're bringing in Dr. Germ to chat it up with us this morning. How cool? I can't wait to see who else we'll get to meet.
