MRSA is scary stuff. You hear about it all over the national media. Last year we had a few local outbreaks in Philly. And in the past 3 months my Great Aunt in Florida suffered from MRSA for weeks and my neighbor's 6 year old neice also had it.
I admit that my background in the pharmaceutical industry coupled with my borderline hypochondria is a kind of "Perfect Storm" causing all kinds of Parental worries about my kids and my own health. But given the growth of anitbiotic resistance, I think everyone should worry at least a teeny tiny bit about MRSA.
Mom Central shared the below tips about preventing the spread of MRSA from a really informative and helpful website called Stop MRSA NOW. And not to scare you more but check out this factual MRSA info I found on the website.......
"MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a type of Staph bacteria found on the skin and in the nose that is resistant to antibiotics. More than 90,000 Americans get potentially deadly MRSA infections every year and in 2005, nearly 19,000 Americans died from MRSA infections. More deaths are linked to MRSA infections than AIDS. "
Scrub up - Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand rub sanitizer.
Wipe it down - Use a disinfecting bleach solution to wipe down and disinfect hard surfaces. (1 tablespoon of disinfecting bleach diluted in 1 quart of water)
Cover your cuts - Keep any nicks or wounds covered with a clean, dry bandage until healed.
Keep to yourself - Do not share personal items, like towels or razors, that come into contact with bare skin.
Use a barrier - Keep a towel or clothing between skin and shared equipment.

Kenzie loves technology and is all over the iPod Touch. Watch her select just the right lighter, open it up and start the flame! Very cute. Her and 10 month old Kyle are actually fighting over Daddy's iPod Touch all the time. Big hint for Santa - I'm hoping for one of these in my stocking this Christmas. And I'm mortified to admit it but I believe my 3 year old will be the one teaching me how to operate it !
Kenzie only turned 3 this week. Do you think we're letting her use our high tech gadgets too soon??? Or do you think learning technology for this generation will be just as important as learning their ABC's???
Impossible to believe that 3 years have passed since little Kenzie was born. We are so lucky to have this little gem in our lives. And as she says to me, "It's a good thing I came down from the stars to live with you and Daddy and Kyle." I totally agree!
In 3 years she's gone from this little helpless newborn born at 36 weeks weighing 6 lbs to a non-stop talker who is so much fun. She loves pretend makeovers, playing, building, painting, dancing, singing, being a big sister, telling stories, and using her imagination. Right about now 3 years ago on 10/20/05 at around 11 PM I started having a sneaking suspicion I was maybe about to have a baby very soon - and my hard, fast, and furious labor was worth the prize. A few of my favorite pics from 3 years ago.
Print your very own Sleeping Beauty Coloring Pages right here! With Kenzie immersed in both a "craft", "coloring" and "princess" craze, we've been enjoying many printable activities found on the web. We love this Sleeping Beauty Coloring Sheet. We've been watching the DVD, reading the storybook, and coloring it up with sheets like this!
Today is Blog Action Day - a day where bloggers from around the world will join forces in an effort to fight poverty. When I joined the blogosphere in 2006, I truly founded my website and the idea behind the "Classy Mommy Cause" with the intention to make a difference. My website has taken on a life of its own and my blog has enabled me to give back to those living in desperate poverty.
For those unfamiliar with my mission at Classy Mommy - I donate 100% of what I earn via my affiliate links to Project Peanut Butter (read more about it below!). In 2006 and 2007, we raised over $1500 - and today for Blog Action Day I'm sending in another $1000 for 2008 affiliate earnings.
Since giving back is such a central part of my website, I couldn't be more thrilled to see bloggers across the web and the 11 Moms writing about fighting poverty to raise awareness and funds for those in desperate situations.
The fact that Walmart is enabling ordinary Moms to make an even bigger financial impact has me totally over the moon. I knew that joining the 11 moms was going to be very special. I knew I'd love meeting and networking with my kindred blog spirits and as a marketer I knew I'd love getting a sneak peek at the world's largest retail organization. But I never imagined working with Walmart would also help me grow my influence and find the resources to give back in an even bigger and more meaningful way. Personally, seeing my 11 Moms desire to make a difference, and Walmart's decision to match our donations is incredibly fulfilling.
Stop by and read the Blog action day posts for my fellow 11moms. Many of these gals are also supporting Project Peanut Butter or other worthy organizaitons. Hooray!
And for here's the skinny on the Classy Mommy Cause and Project Peanut Butter:
Plain and simple. Parents spend big bucks on their children. Research shows that in 2005 the US Retail market for Infant, Toddler and Preschooler products reached over $29 Billion dollars. The mission of Classy Mommy is to harness some of this spending and re-direct dollars to children in need in both the US and throughout the world.
Shop through our affiliate marketing partners and Classy Mommy will donate the proceeds we receive to charities for children in need. Currently, until we establish a permanent partner charity, Classy Mommy will make donations to the following incredible organization:
Project Peanut Butter: A non profit working in southeast Africa to help thousands of malnourished children annually. For only $15, Project Peanut Butter can provide a malnourished child with Ready-to-Eat therapeutic food. Efforts are focused on the nation of Malawi , one of the least developed nations in the world with per capita income of $44 per year. Malnutrition affects 70% of all children in the nation of Malawi with an estimated 23% of children dying before the age of five years old from malnutrition. Project Peanut Butter's therapeutic food has a 95% recovery rate and the UN, World Health Organization, and UNICEF have issued a joint statement on this Ready to Eat Therapeutic food being the # 1 choice for severely malnourished children.
And here's a video with some more details on Project Peanut Butter. Stop by their website and consider making a donation - every $1 makes a big difference when we're all working together to end poverty.
Kyle's first adventure testing out the equipment at our favorite park. He adored the swings but didn't make a peep or squeel as the audiologist suggested this might help with his verbalizing. Guess he'll just start talking when he is good and ready and his ears clear up. Until then at least he's loving the royal swing treatment!
A few days ago I received the devestating news that Dorit Shapiro, Mom and President of the Gal to Gal Foundation lost her battle with Stage 4 Breast Cancer. During her last days Dorit did everything to get her message out about the amazing Gal to Gal Foundation - an organization which strives to help women battling Stage 4 Breast Cancer much like the "Make a Wish" foundation. Dorit emphasized in a recent speech the popular emphasis on preventition and early detection but the importance of recognizing and helping the 300,0000 women who are diagnosed with Stage 4 annually.
10 days ago I hosted a local benefit at my home to encourage my friends and Philly mommy bloggers to join the Gal to Gal Virtual Walk we even created a "Team Classy Mommy". For a minimum donation of only $5 you can design your own gal and watch her walk across the country "virutally" during the month of October and help this incredible foundation. Thanks to all the Philly Mom Bloggers who attended - especially the Chester County Moms Blog who brought all of their writers!
And we all got to feel extra special since a film crew from SBS - Seoul Broadcasting System was at our home filming a segment on American Moms for a show that sounds like our equivalent of 60 minutes which is slated to air on Oct. 19th.
We were thrilled with the support of both national and local companies.
Graco's giving continues to exceed expectations - they are one of the most participatory companies in the blogsphere. Graco donated a brand new ultra popular and functional Nautilus car seat which we were able to use to giveaway to help us encourage big donations!
And locally, Clay's Bakery of Berwyn, PA made the most delicious and gorgeous pink cake for our guests.
Just a few sponsors that provided some delicious food & drink were 4 Real Foods - who make healthy kid sized pizzas and quesidillas and WAT-TAAH - electrolyte enriched water to keep you feeling energetic - both donated goodies for the party. Each attendee also received some great swag. Bags from Mom Logic filled with Epson samples and a brand new awesome Swiffer duster. Kenzie is obsessed with this duster and pretends she is Cinderella with it!
Even cooler were the gifts that companies donated for us to share with those who donated to the cause. We were able to give out dvds of both Hairspray & The Golden Compass. And of course the Graco Nautilus car seat I mentioned earlier!
I met the coupon divas or the couponistas of the blogosphere while I was in Bentonville, Arkansas this past weekend. The absolute highlight of my trip was the opportunity to connect with all these amazing Mommy Bloggers who also share a passion for their websites just like me.
And truly, these ladies in this photo offer some of the BEST coupon advice and strategies found on the web. These Moms are extraordinary when it comes to helping other Moms save money with coupon tricks. Seriously, Alyssa Francis from Kingdom First Mom (3rd from left) practically shows you how to shop for free at CVS. Too cool.
Stop by these ladies websites when you have a minute! I promise you'll be saving in no time with their tips and tricks and will soon join the couponista club.

Loved meeting all of my Eleven Moms from Walmart. Everyone is so wonderful and I feel like we've been friends forever. And reuniting with my Camp Baby buddies Christine - From Dates to Diapers and Amy from Mom Advice was amazing. I love all these ladies - it is nice to connect with all these members of my tribe!
Breakfast with our new friend's at Kellogg's. Love what they are doing to help Moms save money by eating a healthy and inexpensive bowl of cereal in the morning!
Our dinner with Campbell's was yummy. Chef Lee gave us tons of tips to cook a turkey and make stuffing. I need every single tip I can get - I'm feeling kinda excited to try out a few of these tricks ! Amy Clark from MomAdvice and I were ultra excited about Walmart utilizing their supplier pull in a positive direction to help sustainability and the environment. Packaging Car Seats in this wrap instead a huge crazy big box is more convenient for the customer, cheaper for the company to ship, takes up less space on the store floor and best of all REDUCES WASTE. I just loved hearing TONS of examples of what Walmart is doing to help sustainability. We need more companies to wholeheartedly make these efforts. I think (hope!) that more companies are starting to care about these efforts..... I really was impressed with everything I learned about Walmart and their sustainability. Can't say enough about it!
We hung out with the folks at Coca-Cola for some appetizers and as they call it "RED CAN" for those of us who are die hard Classic Coke in a Can kind of people. (I would be a RED CAN girl!) Here's another pic of @JessicaKnows and Christine From Dates to Diapers again!
I'll post more later! Gotta go board my plane to Philly soon......
Hi from Bentonville, Arkansas - aka the home of Walmart! My first surprise upon arriving in Bentonville was a trip to the Salon with my blogging buddies - Erin from Coupon Cravings and Alyssa from Kingdom First Mom - for a hair makeover - compliments of an ultra secret soon to launch shampoo and conditioner.
We're still in the dark about the "secret shampoo" slated to launch on November 24th, but the idea was for us to give this new product a go and see if it helped us deal with our problematic hair issues. As a busy Mama, actually having the time to wash my hair and blow dry it is a MAJOR accomplishment, so going to the salon for a wash and style was total luxury! So as you can imagine in my daily life, everyday is generally a bad hair so I am in need of any kind of professional help!
I can honestly say I was thrilled with the look of my hair after using the "secret" shampoo and conditioner combo. I thought my hair had a sleek and ultra smooth look and feel to it which I loved after the makeover. However, it was also blown dry and styled for me so I know that is a huge help in the hair department! Most impressive was achieving this sleek, smooth, controlled look without the use of ANY styling agents (ie spray or gel) - seriously this was a shampoo and style so perhaps I'll need to be buying more of this secret shampoo once it launches!
Win it! Another cheerful dvd box set from the Care Bears released on October 7, 2009 with a seasonal "Winter" spin. Kenzie adores watching the Care Bears and is so curious about all the different emotions and personalities of each Bear based on their "patch". And I have to admit I get a kick out of her connecting with a character that I consider to be from "my time" growing up in the early 80's as a little girl.

The kids will be saying Bon Voyage to Mommy at 7 am tomorrow as I'll be heading to Bentonville, Arkansas to visit Walmart's headquarters. I'm soooooo elated to meet my fellow 11 Moms, formerly known as the Money Saving Moms - along with the new Mommybloggers who've recently joined this dynamic group. I always think I'll get caught up on sleep on these trips but this never seems to be the case. JessicaKnows has already invited us all up to her hotel room for a mommy blogger/ girl bonding slumber party after our official dinner ends!Posted our itinerary here for anyone interested in the finer details. Cooler highlights include: A Secret Hair Shampoo and styling session for yours truly - I'll post pics! An evening sponsored by Campbell's where a famous Chef is supposedly going to teach us a few tricks to prepare a yummy Thanksgiving Meal. Obviously, if you've seen my prior post today, I need some massive help with my cooking and skills in the kitchen. Attending Walmart's famed Saturday morning Executive Meeting. The MBA in me is totally excited about this opportunity. Marketers salivate over the chance to promote their products with the #1 retailer Walmart and business case studies on Walmart's culture always refer to this Saturday morning meeting which is nearly impossible for outsiders to gain access to. Who would have thought being a Mommy Blogger would be my ticket to an inside peek at Walmart? A chance to meet Harrison Ford and Paula Deen!!!!
Domesticated? Me? That word has NEVER be used to describe me. Sometimes it's nice to share your flaws with your friends and have a good laugh. So, I just had to share this divine appetizer I attempted for the Gal to Gal Fundraising event I held at my home this past week. I can handle being a hostess, but somehow totally managed to burn this Baked Havarti beyond recognition.
Too bad so sad because truly the Baked Havarti is the classic appetizer I always serve and the one recipe friends always request. Not this time! There was no salvaging this yummy treat. I'm still trying to clean my oven from the mess. Nearly a week later - even after my best cleaning efforts, every time I turn on the oven my kitchen fills with smoke.
I suspect my household could not get more wired. Think 1 Desktop with 2 humongous monitors to make web design and toggling between websites ultra seamless. One laptop for Mommy to blog. A keyboard for our TV to surf the web with our Nintendo Wii. A bonus extra mini laptop to bring here there and everywhere. And let’s not forget our iPod Touch – our super powerful and sleek ticket to unlimited info with a few taps of our fingertips.
I find my wired life convenient and intellectually stimulating. It enriches the lives of our children as the potential for entertainment and education is unlimited. Mackenzie, almost 3, loves typing on the laptop and manipulates the iPod Touch to hear her favorite tunes – Backyardigans and Elton John’s Philadelphia Freedom. We google pictures or video of whatever she aspires to learn. Last month was a chrysalis when we found the cocoon of a Monarch Butterfly and this week she’s been asking for Tornados thanks to her obsession with the Wizard of Oz.
Do you think we are over the top with computers?
PS. We’re late adopters - or I guess cheaper - with all things TV related – like we finally got a “High Def” TV last year but are still seeing the silver screen old school style as we’re sticking with our $16 cable package until the switch to digital this coming year. Just not enough time in our days for TV given our wired lives.
We love Fancy Nancy! And isn't it so cool that this fantastic literary character is now making her way into fabulous board games, dress up clothes, and puzzles? Kenzie adores Fancy Nancy, and as a Mom I've got to say I love these stories too and I'm especially keen on Fancy Nancy's "fancy" vocabulary which introduces all kinds of posh and zany words to my 3 year old!
Win it! We've got the chance to giveaway some Fancy Nancy swag to 1 Lucky Classy Mommy Reader. Winner's choice of either the board game or puzzle. To win, please leave a comment on this post. (And feel free to tell me how much you love Fancy Nancy too!) Contest expires October 10th, 2008.
What is it about babies and remotes? Although the little guy will not watch TV for more than 5 seconds, the remote infatuates him endlessly - cool shape, tons of buttons which randomly light up, and of course the sheer fact that I try to immediately take it away from him whenever he finds it only perpetuates his desire to hold onto this gadget for dear life.
