He's Got The Look

Kyle's got this hysterical face he makes all the time. A crazy little scowl. He especially does it if he is getting into trouble. I've found this a bit infuriating while at the same time it is too cute.

We finally realized he is just being a little mimic. His crazy scowl is his best effort to match the expression on our faces when we reprimand him. (Think drawing with crayons on the carpet or sneaking up the stairs by himself or unrolling an entire roll of toilet paper.)

Yes, I scowl fiercely as I try to remain very serious and stern so I can yell at him for his minor mischievous adventures.

(Sorry for the bad clarity of these photos lately but the convenience of iPhone pictures is worth it!)

Flu Shot Anyone? Giveaway for Walgreens $25 Gift Cards

Uggh. The Flu. I'm sure hoping my family and I don't suffer from the seasonal flu this year or the dreaded H1N1 virus either. And when Moms come down with the flu it's a total disaster since for many of us this job is 24/7 and does not include sick days!

We'll all be getting our shots in the coming month! As an asthmatic and person who is susceptible to pneumonia, I've always been a believer in flu shots as it has been somewhat mandatory given my medical history. Plus, if I get a flu shot, it is the one way I can offer protection to my toddler son Kyle. He is allergic to eggs - so he falls into the "can not" receive a flu shot category. This makes me especially worried as we head into this flu season that has received some much media hype. Kyle had RSV as a 6 week old newborn and has history of all kinds of ear issues, so I worry about subsequent ear infections & pneumonia from the Flu. However, there is nothing we can do about it except have the rest of the family get their shot and hope for the best.
As Walgreens has taken a leadership role in flu prevention, they've offered to sponsor a giveaway for 2 of my readers who will each receive a $25 gift card to Walgreens. Seventy-five percent of Walgreens pharmacists are now certified immunizers, in-store flu shots for $24.99 (which may be covered by insurance plans as well as Medicare Part B). Super price too as sometimes the co-pay to visit the doctor (even if the shot is covered by your insurance) is more than this amount. My best friend pays a $35 copay to visit the doctor even though the shots are free, she's considering just getting it at a pharmacy this season for the entire family.

Enter to win 1 of 2 gift cards valued at $25 each. (2 winners)

Recall on Children's Tylenol

Yikes! There's been a recall on a handful of Children's Liquid Tylenol & Infant drops products. (Along with a few cold products as well) Units impacted were made between April 2008 and June 2008. I'm going through my stock now to see what I need to toss.

Here are the details as taken from the Tylenol Website and here is the link to all the SKU's and lot numbers that are impacted.

You may have heard that McNeil Consumer Healthcare (the makers of TYLENOL®) is voluntarily recalling certain lots of Children's and Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products that were manufactured between April, 2008 and June, 2008. All products manufactured met internal specifications. However, the company is implementing this recall because during this period, an unused portion of one inactive ingredient did not meet all quality standards. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it was decided to recall all Children's and Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products listed below, which were made during this time.

Suave-ing it up with an Emmy Party

In honor of Suave styling Kate Walsh's hair for the Emmy Awards, they invited my local stylist over to my home so she could create Suave inspired hair makeovers for my girlfriends and I. We had a great time pretending to "glam" it up for the red carpet.

My hysterical friend Julie captures just how wonderful it is to escape the Mommy routine as she prepares to get styled by Sue with the Suave's line of professional products.

And 3 year old Kenzie joined in on the fun too. She was probably the true star of the red carpet evening! This kid loves make up and fashion. She is non stop into the makeovers so this was her kind of party. I never had such a girly streak as a kid, but Kenzie is all over the beauty routines.

And lots more pics! Several of us went for the bouncy curly look and used Suave's mousse along with Sue curling our hair either with an iron or hot rollers and then applying Suave's hair spray. My girlfriend Allison went with a very sleek up-do after Sue flat ironed her hair.

We had a blast and really enjoyed the chance to focus on our own hair for a change and to get tips from a professional. Thanks to Suave Professionals for inviting my stylist Sue over to our house to work her magic. If you note this before picture, you can see I had a major transformation!

Family Night Galore with a Giveaway

It's always fun to make a Saturday night home with young children a little more exciting and special than just an "ordinary" evening. My kids find the concept of any "special occassion" totally thrilling which certainly makes this Mom & Dad happy we made the extra effort.

Here's a clip from last night's "Family Night."

For the very 1st time, the kids made their very own "homemade" pizza. Kenzie is decked out in her apron & Kyle found the pre-shredded cheese scrumptious. This undomestic diva keeps things simple & quick with the pre-made Pillsbury Dough Pizza crust, pasta sauce, shredded cheese, and a little oregano. You can see how excited the kids are at the prospect of topping our pizza dinner off with a game of Candyland & the Mary Poppins movie.

As the kids get older we'll be able to enjoy even more films and lots more board games. (Right now Kenzie is the only one who can join in a board game with us. So far we've introduced her to CandyLand and Zingo. I'm sure our board game collection will grow this year as she turns 4)

With a 3 year old and 1 year old, I find that just the concept of family night is what really creates a festive atmosphere. A few other fun ideas for young families that we enjoy include:

- Eat an easy meal or Nachos in our finished basement in front of our big screen TV while letting the kids eat, watch, and play during a fun family movie that us Parents can also enjoy like Madagascar, Wall-E, Finding Nemo.

- Sundaes on Sunday - after dinner we'll take a family walk & top off our evening with sundaes. The kids love the whipped cream and sprinkles - especially if we let them apply the toppings themselves.

Win it! We're giving away a $40 gift card to Walmart for you to create your own family game night. Walmart has a huge selection of $8 board games along with tons of $10 DVD's.

This is a fast moving giveaway and will end September 23rd.

Back to Pre-School in Style!

After 4 months of the extended pre-school style summer break, my little preschooler couldn't have been more excited to return to the classroom. As a returning student, this transition definitely was a lot easier than her first "separation" from Mommy.

Taking pictures of the big day will help me remember it years from now. The highlight of my own back to school memories is that classic morning "before school" photo. Hopefully, this will help her remember the moment years from now too.

3 year old Kenzie's overall emotions were positive as she has been anticipating the big day for over a month! We've had her outfit picked out for ages. Clothes are very important to my little Fashionista, so seriously, she selected this outfit over a month ago.

I lost the "pants" or "shorts" argument a long time ago as Kenzie is all about skirts or dresses right now. I knew her favorite jean skirt would make her feel fabulous and give her an extra boost of confidence on the big day. We even planned a short sleeve and long sleeve top to go with her skirt so she could make a game day decision based on the weather! Very cute.

And here are her adorable socks and her favorite "tap" dancing shoes that function just fine on the playground too.

Outfit selection my seem trivial when it comes to back to school, but I think that as a Parent you need to focus on what is important to your kids to be sure they are confident & secure for the big day. I profess style ranks high on my 3 year old's agenda. And walking into the classroom today, one of the little boys in her class was decked out in his Philadelphia Eagles outfit - his version of the power outfit.

With any new experience a case of nerves is to be expected. This summer, when dealing with anxiety over a one week summer day camp, I found really and truly talking with Kenzie about her worries helps us get to the bottom of it and alleviate her nerves.

So, last night Kenzie and I had a pow wow about the big day. Kenzie explained she was definitely a little scared. When I asked why she gave an adorable answer with a valid concern.

She feared they might turn out the lights.

Yes Kenzie is so afraid of the dark she is actually afraid of the shade. We had a good laugh about her fear together when we talked about how "ridiculous" it would be for them to turn off all the lights and even if they did for some reason turn them off, it would still be daylight out and her classroom has plenty of windows. And that was the end of her fears!

Back to school drop off went fabulous. For the 1st day, I walked her into the classroom so little Kyle and I could properly see her off. She's already loving every minute of it!

Worried about the Back to School transition and all the emotions that come with it? To calm the butterflies and build your kids’ confidence, Hallmark put together an excellent resource to encourage moms like you on Divine Caroline. Just for sharing a bit of advice, you’ll be entered to win a prize package valued at $500… Check it out!

Walking the Runway at Elle Style 360 Geren Ford Fashion Show

What a day! Modeling was never in my stars, especially at a height of 5' ft 2". Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd get to experience a backstage behind the scenes peek at Fashion Week topped off with my very own walk down the runway. Thanks to an unbelievable invite from Tide Total Care, yesterday was like a dream. (Talk about a way a brand can engage a Mommyblogger huh??) And I survived my walk in spiked heels without turning into total fashion roadkill a la Carrie Bradshaw in the classic Sex & The City episode. De-ramping off the end of the runway in my heels was a bit of a challenge, but luckily I didn't topple!
My Geren Ford Look: High waisted mini paired with a silver silky tank.

Here's the Runway! We all took a practice run minus our heels. They don't let you practice in the heels because the runway is white. Kind of defeats the purpose of the walk through huh?

What was it like? Ultra bright! The lights were practically blinding. Brighter than you could ever imagine. And at the end of the runway, we paused to get our photo taken by a zillion photographers - think Elle, Vogue, etc. (Unlikely I'll be ending up in any of those publications!) The "Moms" hopped off the runway to "de-ramp" and sit in the audience for the remainder of the show. The models each had 2 outfits and hit the runway 2x. We just did the walk down to show fashion is for real people too!

Hair & Makeup? Everyone wears the same look for the show. They blew my hair out and then put in a new "dry shampoo" spray product called Rockaholic. Smelled fabulous and by the makers of BedHead. Next they curled us all for a natural flowing look. A team from Sephora did everyone's makeup. And yes, I'm pretty sure we all shared the same lip gloss as they give you one final prep right before hitting the runway. Everyone was literally lined up waiting for their turn to strut their stuff. The 4 Moms in front were followed by about 15-20 real models.

Why Moms? Tide's genius campaign idea to include "Real Moms" in the Geren Ford Spring 2010 fashion show meant myself and a few other Moms got to be glam for the day. We actually opened up the show before the real models hit the runway which made it even more special. If only someone could do my hair and make up everyday. Tide Total Care was sponsoring Geren Ford's show since 65% of her runway line is washable and Tide wanted to show that wearable is washable with "real" people....thus my inclusion with the nearly 6 ft tall and gorgeous young models.

Cool stuff! Meeting Perez Hilton in his hot pink suit after his walk in the PINK fashion show which ended right before our show.

What's in for next season? Mini skirts and all kinds of ruffles and flair!

Before & After Looks: Kara, SavvyMommy, Audrey & I.

How were the models? Awesome! The real models were very kind and gracious about our excitement over the moment and shared some inside tips on walking in heels. Tip: Scuff those shoes and even try to tear the bottoms a bit with a pair of scissors! Insider info: Everyone shares the same lip gloss - especially when the stylists are in a hurry and realize they forgot to finish your lips. Yes, models get naked and change in a gigantic room full of men (press, stylists, etc.) - trust me there was no time to spare for modesty. Fashion shows are all about Hurrying Up and then Waiting. Scuff those heels on the concrete or even use a pair of scissors to scrape the bottoms so you don't slip. Sadly, one beautiful model from our show lost one blue heel during her walk down the runway. (She kept is together and kept on walking with only one shoe. But obviously, this most be a model's nightmare!)

Thanks to Tide for this incredible experience I'll remember forever. What a way to spend the day in NYC.

Stride Rite Giveaway

Win it! We're giving away a pair of Stride Rite's latest shoe for toddlers created with Sensory Response Technology (SRT). The SRT collection helps babies develop a healthy gait when learning to walk. This flexible design allows for more freedom of movement and has a unique construction that reduces stumbles and falls.

I actually just bought a pair of these for Kyle a few weeks ago when I went back to school shopping for the kids as I love getting their feet measured "professionally" at least twice a year along with purchasing a pair of real shoes for the kids that I know are best for their feet to go along with the inexpensive cute findsI might buy at mass retailers. The SRT collection comes in sizes 3-8 (with half sizes) along with being available in regular, wide, and extra wide - which as many Parents know is a huge help in being able to wrangle shoes on those sweet plump baby feet.
Enter to win: (1 winner - Winner's choice of size & gender - we can't guarantee the style of your choice, but we'll do our best!)

Walking the Runway

Tomorrow I'll be walking the runway at the Elle Style 360 Fashion Show. Crazy huh? Let's hope I don't pull a Carrie Bradshaw and fall during my trip down the runway like she did in this episode of Sex & the City. Truly, I'm somewhat terrified of falling in my heels!

In an effort to show that "washable is fashionable" I'll be wearing a design by Geren Ford for Spring 2010 whose show is sponsored by Tide Total Care. Her collection for the Spring 2010 show is over 65% washable and Tide needed some "real" people for the project to show that beautiful fashions can and should fit into a real woman’s lifestyle. So I'll be a "real" person model as I'm sure everyone will notice with my 5 ft 2" profile compared to the 6 ft models!

Car Seat Safety Tips from Chicco

It's Child Passenger Safety Week and Chicco USA has shared a fantastic guest blog post, by Julie Robbins, a 22 year veteran in the cause of Child Safety, about Car Seat Safety Tips. Thanks Chicco for supporting our community with this important information. We'll also be giving away a Chicco Key Fit 30 Infant Seat this week in coordination with this safety info.
Buckling up For all Ages: by Julie Robbins
As an injury prevention specialist for over 22 years, as well as a nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technician Instructor, I am passionate about teaching people how to keep children safe when riding in a car. However, the fact that I am a mother of four and grandmother of three is the main reason my absolute top priority is the safety and welfare of all children. We can’t prevent all of the little bumps and bruises of childhood, but there are steps we can take to reduce the risk of injury to our children. The biggest risk our children face is motor vehicle crashes. Properly securing all children in appropriate car safety seats, booster seats, or safety belts every time is the best defense.

The week of September 12-18 is National Child Passenger Safety Week. The week kicks off on September 12, 2009, with “National Seat Check Saturday,” where certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians provide free car safety seat inspections nationwide that educate parents and caregivers on how to install them properly in their vehicles. According to research from the National Highway Safety Administration, three out of four car safety seats are installed incorrectly. It is critical to choose a car safety seat that you will feel confident installing correctly every time.

The four stages of protection for your child in a car.(Every time you move to the next stage, LESS protection is provided. So, don’t be in a hurry to move them! )

1. Rear-facing is safest. Try to keep your child rear-facing until at least 24 months, longer if the car safety seat weight and height limit allows. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new research showing that toddlers are more than five times safer riding rear-facing in a car safety seat up to their second birthday. You may want to start with an infant-only seat for convenience. You will need a convertible seat (one that faces the rear and forward) when your baby outgrows the infant seat.
2. Forward-facing with a harness: Keep your child in a harness until at least 4 or 5 years old. Most kids younger than 5 are not mature enough to sit still without a full harness.
3. Booster seat: Use after your child has outgrown the harness weight limit of her forwarding-facing seat, and is mature enough to sit still. A booster will only it do its job to protect your child if your child is seated in it properly with the vehicle safety belts postioned properly on him. A wiggly child could be out of positon when a crash occurs and not be protected. You may need to buy a car safety seat with a harness that goes to a higher weight if your child is still too wiggly for his booster.
4. Adult safety belt: Use when your child is big enough, usually not until he reaches 4’ 9”, and mature enough to wear it properly. See the 5-step Test at http://www.carseat.org/.

Some features to look for when shopping for a car safety seat.
These features will make fit, use, and installation easier for you:

Rear-facing infant-only seat: Carrier with a detachable base that can be used with and without the base. Minimum weight limit of less than 5 pounds; maximum weight limit of at least 30 pounds. At least 3 harness positions, with the lowest position less than 8 inches. Well-designed, easy to use, newborn insert that helps with harness fit on small infants. Head support that has very little or no padding behind the baby’s head.

Convertible seat (faces the rear and forward) Maximum rear-facing weight limit of at least 35 pounds. Maximum forward-facing weight limit of at least 65 pounds.

Combination seat (forward-facing only, can also be used as a booster). Maximum weight limit when used with the harness of at least 65 pounds. Height limit as a booster of at least 57 inches.

Look for these features on any car safety seat with a harness:
5-point harness (no shield).
Front adjuster for the harness (near the child’s feet). Easy to use LATCH connectors, the kind that push on and have a button to release are easiest. Easy to use LATCH adjuster.
Accessible seat belt path.

Some features to look for when shopping for a booster seat:
Booster seats are easy to use. The best person to help with the decision is the child! If a child has a role in choosing his booster, he will be more likely to want to stay in it longer. This will make using it easier for you.
These features will ensure proper fit:
Maximum weight limit of at least 80 pounds.
Maximum height limit of at least 57 inches.
Adjustable backrest.
Adjustable Shoulder belt guide with large opening (may move with the backrest).
Adjustable width at the shoulders. Lap belt guides that keep the lap belt down on the lower hips or upper thighs.

The best car safety seat or booster:
There are several different rating programs available for car safety seats and boosters. These should only be used as a guide. The BEST car seat is the one that fits your child, fits your vehicle, and is easy for you to use correctly every time. After narrowing down your choices in the store, be sure to try installing them in your vehicle (both rear-facing and forward-facing, if a convertible) before you buy. Always follow BOTH the safety seat instructions and the vehicle owner’s manual for proper installation.
Using it correctly is what makes it a safe seat.
All car safety seats and boosters must meet stringent Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to be sold in the U.S. It is when they are not used correctly that makes them unsafe. Always read and follow the instructions for the safety seat. Also, read the vehicle owner’s manual section on child restraints. The most common misuses can be avoided by simply following these directions. If you are having difficulty using or installing your car safety seat or booster, call the manufacturer or contact a local Child Passenger Safety Technician.
LATCH or the safety belt
LATCH and the vehicle safety belt are equally safe. Choose the method that holds the car safety seat the tightest. Always try installing the car seat in the rear center seating position first; move to the side if a tight fit cannot be achieved. Many vehicles and car safety seats do not allow LATCH use in the center seating position. Only use LATCH in the center if it is allowed by BOTH the vehicle manufacturer and the car safety seat manufacturer. Never use LATCH and a vehicle safety belt at the same time unless approved by both manufacturers; this can affect crash performance of the car safety seat.

Important Reminders
Buckle up everyone, every time, every trip! In a crash or emergency braking, an unbuckled passenger can be thrown into other passengers causing serious injury. Also, ensure there are no heavy, loose objects in the vehicle that can be thrown around in a crash.
Never put a rear-facing safety seat in front of an active air bag.
All children under at least 13 should ride in the back seat. The back seat is 30 percent safer than the front seat.
Always buckle your baby into the safety seat first, and then cover her with blankets. Avoid bulky clothing. This can interfere with proper harness fit. A good trick for older children is to buckle them in without their jacket and then put it on them backwards over the harness. Of course, you may want them to wear the jacket out to the car in colder months.
Never add any product (including toys and car seat covers or liners) or make any changes to a car safety seat or booster that is not approved by the manufacturer of the seat. Add-on products can interfere with the crash performance of the seat. Beware! Many manufacturers of add-on products will state they have tested them—ONLY use products approved by the car safety seat manufacturer! The safety seat manufacturer is the only one that can confirm the test results of its product.
Never put an infant-only seat on top of a shopping cart. This makes the shopping cart top heavy. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Academy of Pediatrics warn against this practice due to numerous reported injuries from carts tipping over and/or babies falling out.

Finally, I can’t say this enough: ALWAYS read and follow both the car safety seat instructions AND the vehicle owners’ manual when using and installing your child’s seat!
I know that there are many days when life is very hectic. Our children are precious cargo; never take shortcuts when it comes to car safety seats. Taking the time to make sure you have your child buckled up correctly could be what saves her life. I know this firsthand. One of my daughters would not have celebrated her 24th birthday this year if she hadn’t been in her car safety seat 23 years ago.

Win Tickets to Mary Poppins on Broadway in NYC!

Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious! Calling all residents who live near New York City! (NJ, CT, PA, etc.) We're giving away 2 tickets to see Mary Poppins on Broadway in NYC for the Sunday October 18th show at 6:30 PM. Contest has ended.... Congrats to Michelle from PA.

I know I'm dying to someday take my daughter to see Mary Poppins on Broadway (maybe for her 4th birthday this fall or next spring when she is even older) so I'm sure there is a Classy Mommy reader who would love a set of these tickets. Little Tikes Cozy Coupe Giveaway

Win it! We're giving away one Little Tikes Cozy Coupe to a lucky reader. The Cozy Coupe is one of Kyle and Kenzie's favorite outdoor toys at our house. Kenzie acquired our little red car at 18 months when a neighbor had left their old version from years ago in the garbage. This little car quickly became a treasure. We pretend to pump gas into it and we play car wash too as the kids wash it with a sponge on a regular basis in the summer.

Obama's School Speech to Kids with Transcript & Text

Today, President Obama will make a speech to school children across America. If you're curious about the transcript and text of his speech you can few it in full below as his prepared remarks were released by The White House Media yesterday. The very idea of his speech has caused a bit of controversy, but I'm impressed with this effort and the remarks below. (And yes, in full disclosure, voted for Obama.)

I attended public school my entire life and my memory may be failing me thanks to Mom Brain, but I don't ever remember a Presidential address aired in our schools. I find his message inspirational and I like how he is trying to share the value of an education with everyone across America despite the varied circumstances or hardships many aspiring students may face.

Here are the prepared remarks taken directly from the White House Media release.

The President: Hello everyone – how’s everybody doing today? I’m here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I’m glad you all could join us today.

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.

I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia for a few years, and my mother didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday – at 4:30 in the morning.
Now I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and say, "This is no picnic for me either, buster."

So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.
Now I’ve given a lot of speeches about education. And I’ve talked a lot about responsibility.
I’ve talked about your teachers’ responsibility for inspiring you, and pushing you to learn.
I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with that Xbox.
I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren’t working where students aren’t getting the opportunities they deserve.

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.

And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.
Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.

Maybe you could be a good writer – maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper – but you might not know it until you write a paper for your English class. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor – maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or a new medicine or vaccine – but you might not know it until you do a project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a Senator or a Supreme Court Justice, but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.
And no matter what you want to do with your life – I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it.

And this isn’t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you’re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.

You’ll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment. You’ll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. You’ll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy.
We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems. If you don’t do that – if you quit on school – you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country.

Now I know it’s not always easy to do well in school. I know a lot of you have challenges in your lives right now that can make it hard to focus on your schoolwork.
I get it. I know what that’s like. My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mother who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn’t always able to give us things the other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and felt like I didn’t fit in.
So I wasn’t always as focused as I should have been. I did some things I’m not proud of, and got in more trouble than I should have. And my life could have easily taken a turn for the worse.

But I was fortunate. I got a lot of second chances and had the opportunity to go to college, and law school, and follow my dreams. My wife, our First Lady Michelle Obama, has a similar story. Neither of her parents had gone to college, and they didn’t have much. But they worked hard, and she worked hard, so that she could go to the best schools in this country.
Some of you might not have those advantages. Maybe you don’t have adults in your life who give you the support that you need. Maybe someone in your family has lost their job, and there’s not enough money to go around. Maybe you live in a neighborhood where you don’t feel safe, or have friends who are pressuring you to do things you know aren’t right.
But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life – what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you’ve got going on at home – that’s no excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude. That’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. That’s no excuse for not trying.
Where you are right now doesn’t have to determine where you’ll end up. No one’s written your destiny for you. Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future.
That’s what young people like you are doing every day, all across America.

Young people like Jazmin Perez, from Roma, Texas. Jazmin didn’t speak English when she first started school. Hardly anyone in her hometown went to college, and neither of her parents had gone either. But she worked hard, earned good grades, got a scholarship to Brown University, and is now in graduate school, studying public health, on her way to being Dr. Jazmin Perez.

I’m thinking about Andoni Schultz, from Los Altos, California, who’s fought brain cancer since he was three. He’s endured all sorts of treatments and surgeries, one of which affected his memory, so it took him much longer – hundreds of extra hours – to do his schoolwork. But he never fell behind, and he’s headed to college this fall.

And then there’s Shantell Steve, from my hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Even when bouncing from foster home to foster home in the toughest neighborhoods, she managed to get a job at a local health center; start a program to keep young people out of gangs; and she’s on track to graduate high school with honors and go on to college.

Jazmin, Andoni and Shantell aren’t any different from any of you. They faced challenges in their lives just like you do. But they refused to give up. They chose to take responsibility for their education and set goals for themselves. And I expect all of you to do the same.

That’s why today, I’m calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education – and to do everything you can to meet them. Your goal can be something as simple as doing all your homework, paying attention in class, or spending time each day reading a book. Maybe you’ll decide to get involved in an extracurricular activity, or volunteer in your community. Maybe you’ll decide to stand up for kids who are being teased or bullied because of who they are or how they look, because you believe, like I do, that all kids deserve a safe environment to study and learn. Maybe you’ll decide to take better care of yourself so you can be more ready to learn. And along those lines, I hope you’ll all wash your hands a lot, and stay home from school when you don’t feel well, so we can keep people from getting the flu this fall and winter.

Whatever you resolve to do, I want you to commit to it. I want you to really work at it.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work -- that your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.

But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. You won’t click with every teacher. Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right this minute. And you won’t necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try.

That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was rejected twelve times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, "I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures define you – you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time. If you get in trouble, that doesn’t mean you’re a troublemaker, it means you need to try harder to behave. If you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying.

No one’s born being good at things, you become good at things through hard work. You’re not a varsity athlete the first time you play a new sport. You don’t hit every note the first time you sing a song. You’ve got to practice. It’s the same with your schoolwork. You might have to do a math problem a few times before you get it right, or read something a few times before you understand it, or do a few drafts of a paper before it’s good enough to hand in.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new. So find an adult you trust – a parent, grandparent or teacher; a coach or counselor – and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.

And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you – don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

The story of America isn’t about people who quit when things got tough. It’s about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.

It’s the story of students who sat where you sit 250 years ago, and went on to wage a revolution and found this nation. Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war; who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon. Students who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google, Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other.

So today, I want to ask you, what’s your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a president who comes here in twenty or fifty or one hundred years say about what all of you did for this country?

Your families, your teachers, and I are doing everything we can to make sure you have the education you need to answer these questions. I’m working hard to fix up your classrooms and get you the books, equipment and computers you need to learn. But you’ve got to do your part too. So I expect you to get serious this year. I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do. I expect great things from each of you. So don’t let us down – don’t let your family or your country or yourself down. Make us all proud. I know you can do it.

Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.

Tween Dora & Dora's Explorer Girls

The evolution of pre-school aged Dora into Tween Dora has caused a lot of hype. Personally, I don't mind the updated and stylish look of the Tween Dora. I think she's pretty cute and certainly not overly sexy nor is she baring any belly like a Bratz doll. My almost 4 year old daughter wears leggings and swing tops regularly so this look fits in my opinion. Mattel and Nickelodeon suggest the old Dora will still be around for the pre-school set and that this new Dora is geared to the girls 5+ who are aging up so they can continue with the franchise.
My understanding is that the Tween Dora will be released this fall in a line of toys called "Dora's Explorer Girls" and the cornerstone of the collection will be a Dora Links doll that will have an online game component as she will hook up to your PC. The price point I saw in my online research was about $60, but I've yet to receive any official press release or review samples on the product myself.

Mattel & Nickelodeon executives say the following, "As tweenage Dora, our heroine has moved to the big city, attends middle school and has a whole new fashionable look. What’s more, she now has a rich online world in which girls can explore, play games, customize, and most importantly solve mysteries with Dora and her new friends." (Via Business Wire)

What are you thoughts on the new look and Tween Dora line?

1. Elmo

What baby doesn't love Elmo and all his friends from Sesame Street? This is a super fun theme with characters that everybody will surely recognize and enjoy. We threw Elmo themed 1st birthday parties for both Kenzie and Kyle. They were a total hit. And if you can get your hands on an adult Elmo costume so he can make a cameo visit to your 1st birthday party, the kids will be amazed. We were able to have Elmo visit Kenzie's party and it was incredible for her and all our guests. (Note: if you think your child is afraid of characters you might want to skip the Elmo visit. We knew Kyle was terrified of characters and strangers so we didn't borrow the costume as it would have terrified him!)

Celebrate your baby's 1st with Pooh and all his friends from the 100 Acre Wood! This is truly a timeless classic that your guests will definitely love.

For a trendy TV theme, pick Dora or Diego. Dora and Diego are popular with older kids as well as babies making it a great party theme. Create a game to get the kids involved like "Rescue an Animal" or go on a treasure hunt where all the kids get a simple map just like Dora and they can go on a mission to find their party favors or the birthday cake.

Celebrate with characters your baby and guests will surely recognize from their favorite Baby Einstein learning videos!

You can't go wrong with friendly farm animals. The theme for my goddaughter's 1st birthday was farm animals and her Mom made an incredible Barn style cake with all kinds of animals peeping out. These cute, cartoon animals are sure to stimulate interest in all ages and make for fun party favors. Favors were awesome skinny plastic farm animals that were a hit with the kids. Thank you Oriental Trading Company! There are several different "farm animal" patterns to choose from if this one doesn't strike your fancy. They are often in stock at Target as well as all the online venues.

Celebrate your little "mouseketeer's" first birthday with a fun Mickey Mouse theme that will definitely bring smiles to your guests.

Celebrate with your baby's best friend - their teddy bear! A simple, happy theme for you and your guests to enjoy.

Toddlers love rubber ducks. They just can't get enough of those squeezable and lovable bright critters. Plus, they are super cheap to order in bulk from Oriental Trading Company and everyone will be able to go home with a few ducks of their own. Bright yellow duck decorations are cheery and bright - perfect for a 1st birthday party atmosphere!

Thomas the Tank Engine is a great theme that you could really elaborate on with all the fun, train accessories to include. Your 1 year old's guests will surely appreciate the "choo choo" decor.

Babies and kids magically connect with animals. Here's another assortment of fun animals that one year olds will definitely enjoy partying with! You can take the theme as far as you'd like with music, decorations, or even a visit from the local Zookeeper!

Leap Frog Gives Back

As an Ambassador for Leap Frog's Summer Reading Program, Leap Frog enabled me to donate both their Tag and Tag Jr. reading systems along with headsets, carrying cases, and their books to libraries and preschools in my community. Talk about a company that believes in giving back! Here's a photo of the kids and I donating Leap Frog goodies to the Stepping Stone Child care center, a subsidized preschool & day Care in Phoenixville. The staff there couldn't have been more appreciative of our donation - they even were giving us hugs! This felt wonderful and I feel confident the reading systems will be put to good use. I can't tell you how thrilling it was to be able to be a little Leapfrog Fairy sprinkling these educational products to preschools in need, our local library systems, and via our Phoenixville Area Community Support system which assisted me in finding families in need which could benefit & appreciation the donation of a Tag Reader.
We love Leap Frog's products -especially the Tag Reader systems - so I couldn't be happier to promote such a valuable reading tool. Seriously, my husband and I swear we see the learning happening before our eyes when my daughter plays with her Tag Reader. And as a Mom aspiring to make a difference in my community, it doesn't get much better than this.

Kids Room Decorating Ideas: NYC Boy's Bedroom

Isn't it fun to take a sneak peek into someone else's world, even if only for a minute? Well, here's a chance to see inside the classy, upscale bedroom of a 6-year-old boy, Gavin, who lives on the Upper West Side in NYC. Maybe it can give you some ideas for decorating your own baby's nursery or boy's room!

Space is a premium in the city, but this luxurious room is both spacious and well organized, making the most of every inch. The decorations are whimsical and stylish, topped off with a personal touch. Gavin was born in London, so there are a variety of items displaying images from London (think changing of the guards, double-decker buses, etc). Gavin likes trains and cars, as reflected by his bedding, as well as dogs, which are reflected in the art on his walls. I love the eclectic mix of different pieces of "dog" art that work so well together... there's everything from Peanuts' Snoopy to Blue Dog by Rodrigue.

Gavin's bedroom serves as a make-shift playroom during the day too, so the floor space is well utilized. It's home to his train set, but the rest of the toys are put away after playtime in the host of drawers and shelves throughout the room, as well as in the toychest. The sleeper sofa is a much valued addition to the room. Not only does it give a parent a comfy place to sit while a child plays on the floor, but it's a great place to snuggle up with your child for a bedtime book, and you can also have guests sleep on the pull-out sleeper. If space is a concern in your child's bedroom, consider a 1.5 seat sofa instead of a big sofa... they even make ones that can fold out to a Twin sleeper!

Here's a close-up of the top of Gavin's toy chest. Isn't it adorable? It's a hand-painted treasure from London. It is even personalized with his name and birthdate.

And here's a look at the ever-important closet! Situated between two built-ins, this closet has it all. There's a place for everything a little boy needs... pants, shirts, sweaters, play clothes, laundry, momentos/tokens, etc. I need someone to organize my closet like this!

Finally, here's a quick video tour of the room, where you can see a few other items not seen in the photographs. I hope that this "peek" into a little boy's room helped to give you a few ideas the next time you go to decorate!

Michelle Duggar Family Pregnant Again: 19th child on the way!

Michelle & Jim Duggar, the parents of the now famous Duggar family with 18 children and one grandchild on the way, announced they are now pregnant with Baby # 19 who will be due in the spring of 2010. Kind of crazy huh? I wonder when they will finally decide they have enough children. She's only 42 so I presume in another year or two we'll hear that baby # 20 is on the way. I'm feeling exhausted with just 2 kids and found my pregnancies to be virtual torture. I can't imagine spending half my life pregnant let alone being the mother of 19! Michelle Duggar has a super blog post about her pregnancy on her blog here that I really enjoyed reading. I profess I was surprised how much I liked her blog and post given I wasn't sure I could relate to a Mom of 18 with one on the way! She talks about not taking her pregnancies for granted and the 1st three months being tough for her. She shares tips on how she tries to curb the constant nausea that for many of us can be a form of torture. (Yes it really was 24/7 torture for me for about 14 weeks !)

For more on the Duggar family, you can check out their reality show on TLC, "18 Kids and Counting." Looks like a title change will be in store soon!

We've found a cool feature of Pottery Barn Teen's website to help you out with your household and bedroom redecorating. As our Classy Mommy found out after remodelling her kitchen, home improvement can be a little bit addictive but you always want to make sure you are not just jumping on the latest decorating trends. Pottery Barn Teen and Pottery Barn both offer great tools to help you redesign. The PBTeen website is surprisingly helpful for all you parents who are looking to redesign your old nursery to suit your growing toddler.

One thing to definitely keep in mind is that the latest trends will be out of style quickly so you don't want to just redesign with trendy items that will need to be replaced in a few years. This is where PBTeen comes in handy. They have colorful, fun items that will add character to your kid's room but will also last as they grow older. With an age neutral base for your room, you will be able to bring in and out accessories that fit their changing interests as they grow up.

The Pottery Barn Teen website and the Pottery Barn website offer tools to help you redesign your rooms. Click the links to be taken to the do-it-yourself tool pages. Once you have worked with Pottery Barn's design to tool to pick out or just get ideas for practical items for the room that will last as your children grow up, then you can start shopping around for accessories that will give the room more flair and character such as bedding accessories or fun wall art.
