My Little Red Riding Hood

Exciting times! Halloween is tomorrow night. We've had a super busy week as yesterday was Kenzie's Halloween Parade, tomorrow is her birthday party, and then we'll be trick or treating with both kids in the evening. (Kyle will likely be a super hero as I've been unable to coerce him into either the bear or horse getup we purchased for him.)

Don't forget to be safe when you're out trick or treating with the kids. Thanks to the folks at Fed Ex and Safe Kids USA who sent us these safety tips.

Keeping Kids Safe on Halloween
Always trick-or-treat with an adult until age 10
Only trick-or-treat in familiar areas that are well lit
Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
Look left, right and left again when crossing; always walk, don’t run, when crossing streets
Make eye contact with drivers and watch for cars that are turning or backing up
Walk on sidewalks or paths; if there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible
Never dart out into the street or cross in between parked cars
Wear light-colored, flame-retardant, costumes decorated with retro-reflective tape or stickers
Wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes to prevent trips and falls
Carry a flashlight or glow stick to increase visibility to drivers
Wear face paint and makeup; a mask can restrict a child’s vision

A Tea Party for Kenzie

It's Tea Time! We didn't let the rescheduling of Kenzie's birthday party (thanks to H1N1) stop our fun last Saturday. Instead, Nana surprised both Kenzie and Mom with a reservation for Tea at the Simpson Tea Room in Chester Springs, PA.
While certainly not anything like Tea at the Plaza in New York, Kenzie was beyond thrilled with our outing. (Not that I've ever been to Tea at the Plaza, but I do imagine the experience belongs in a different stratosphere than that of our local tea room)
Kenzie loves treats and food is the way to her heart. She ordered a grand hot chocolate with whipped cream and Peter Pan Tea Sandwiches, also kown as a triple decker PBJ. For dessert we all devoured the seasonal gingerbread cake with fresh cream. It was delicious!
We all loved the girl time together and practicing being fancy and sipping from tea cups. We all can't wait to return to the Simpson Tea Room for another special occasion. If you are from the Chester County area - the Simpson Tea Room is off of Byers Rd. and next to Pickering Valley Elementary School. The prices were super reasonable and we even had a stellar coupon to buy one entree and get one free.

Little Buddy Child Tracker GPS Device

Want GPS for your little explorer? For $99, Insignia has introduced the "Little Buddy Child Tracker" GPS device to give you some peace of mind when your precocious kids are wandering. Available at Best Buy in blue or green. The Little Buddy Child Tracker fits into a lunchbox or backpack and apparently has a 1 week battery life. ( Currently, it is back ordered on Best Buy.)

And yes, this post and product are legitimate which is a little bit hard to believe with a price point of only $99 for a GPS tracking device. I've not yet reviewed this product myself but figured you'd like the general product info.

Today, the Chicago Sun Times reported that, "It combines global satellite positioning and cellular technology to signal the child's whereabouts to a computer or smart phone. Parents can program the device to set up specific times and locations where the child is supposed to be -- in school or at home, for example -- and the device sends a text message if the child leaves the site in that time."

Techies have supposedly given this GPS for kiddies angry write ups, but maybe they're not worried parents. Seriously, I plan to invest in this $99 GPS device or something compatible to keep track of my adventurous toddler Kyle when he hits the preschool years. Already he'll begin to wander into the woods on his own accord while we're playing in the backyard if we don't stop him.

Kate Gosselin Wig - For real!

Can't resist sharing this one. Moms if you need an easy Halloween costume that will get everybody talking, try this Kate Gosselin Wig for just $12. Pretty hysterical. And cheap too! You can buy it here.

Kate Gosselin's fame is now affirmed as she joins the ranks of Spiderman, Batgirl, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and every other possible Halloween costume out there. Yes, you've made it ultra big time when they create a Halloween costume for you.

I always wonder just what is up with Kate's haircut. I mean really... would you want this hairstyle? I doubt it. Kate manages to somehow pull it off but it is weird! Whatever we may think about Kate, I suspect her hair is just one more fantastic way for this marketing genius to get more buzz for herself, her brand, her family and her show.

Baby Einstein Refund

If you purchased a Baby Einstein DVD in the last 5 years, you are eligible to return your DVD for a full refund of $15.99 or you may opt to trade your DVD in for a Baby Einstein Book or Music CD of your choice if you were not satisfied with your experience. Each household can return up to 4 DVD's for $15.99 each.

The easy to follow Baby Einstein refund instructions can be found here.

Wondering why you can get a refund on your Baby Einstein DVD's? Well the FTC has deemed the marketing of Baby Einstein DVD's by Disney as "educational" videos for infants to be a false claim. The CCFC filed this complaint in 2006 at which point Disney stopped claiming the DVD's were educational. However, customers were not offered a refund or return/exchange option. The CCFC pressed on with the FTC and now until March 4th, 2010 you can exchange your item for a refund.

Personally, I never found the Baby Einstein DVD's to be an overly educational experience for my young infants under 6 months however, I certainly found them to be entertaining for my kids and they definitely offered a much needed break for Mom. Usually, we watched our DVD's together, but they provided a refreshing break for Mom as it enabled someone else to be the entertainer for a 20 minutes. We especially enjoyed the Farm Animal & World Animal versions and I'd recommend those Baby Einstein DVDs to any Parent looking for a dvd option for their young babies under 9 months old.

Conversations with Kyle

Now that our late blooming talker Kyle is beginning to speak more we're having some funny conversations. This is how it usually plays out with our sweet mischievous boy who loves to color on the walls, carpet, or find a way make a mess or destruct.

Mom or Dad: "Did you break it Kyle?"
Kyle rolls his eyes and says, "Noooooooo."
Mom or Dad quickly follow with, "Kyle. Who broke it?"
With 2 adorable fingers pointing at himself, Kyle says, "Meeeee!"

Central Park Carousel

You must check out a New York City kid's treasure... the Central Park Carousel! Located in the heart of Central Park near the intersection of Central Park Driveway/6th Ave. and 65th Transverse (near Sheep's Meadow), the carousel was built in 1871 and is still going strong. The carousel has the largest hand-carved figures ever constructed... the horses are 3/4 the size of a real horse! The figures are all hand-painted, as well, and Wurlizter music streams beautifully from a Ruth Sohn band organ in the middle of the carousel. Outside the carousel there are vendors of ice cream, cotton candy and the like, so you really get the feeling that you're at a county fair. There's also a picnic area that you can rent out for birthday parties if you live nearby. The Central Park Carousel is open all year round, weather permitting, so it's something you can enjoy in the summer and winter alike.

A ride lasts 3-4 minutes long and costs a very reasonable $2 per person per ride. I promise you that it will delight kids of all ages. As my husband, Brian, so eloquently put it, "This is no slouch carousel!" It is fast! Check out a video below for a shortened version of the super fun ride I took with family.

Happy 4th Birthday Mackenzie

4 years ago today my little girl surprised us all with her arrival a month early. How well I can remember my water breaking after my gigantic pasta & meatball dinner and the memorable natural childbirth that followed.

Hard to believe that the tiny girl once in my belly is now my most special little friend in the world. For fans of the original "Mini Padilla" website, here is a link to the archives with those adorable photos and videos of the early days.

We spent the morning at Kenzie's favorite park with friends as we skipped our regular Wednesday swimming lessons - since it the only activity she hates, it didn't seem fair to go on her bday. Tonight we'll eat Chocolate Cupcakes and she'll be able to open up her very special present. Mom decided to splurge and spoil her with An American Girl - Just Like You doll. We'll see how she likes it as I don't know how the actual real life doll will compete with her obsessive love affair with the American Girl Catalog for the past 5 months. Hopefully, she will be excited and surprised. Especially as I explained today that they don't sell American Girls Phoenixville. Our conversation followed with her understanding it would be impossible to buy an American Girl locally since they'd only sell them in New York City and other cities where the American Girls are from. We left it that she'll need to ask Santa since he is more magical than Mommy and maybe he could make it happen.

Born Free Giveaway

Win it! We're giving away 1 prize package of 4 trainer cups from Born Free valued at $38.99.

I'm a fan of Born Free products since they were the very 1st trusted brand I could turn to for BPA free products. My newborn son was about 6 weeks old when the BPA awareness hit the mainstream media in early 2008, and like every other parent I was scrambling for a safe bottle solution for the times that I couldn't breastfeed.

Mattel Games Family Fun & Giveaway

As the days grow shorter, the weather cools, and the kids start going stir crazy, we all start looking for activities to keep parents sane and the kids entertained. Mattel Games just launched a new line of fun games geared towards pre-schoolers and young children that are exciting for the entire family.

We had the pleasure of trying out 4 new great games that Mattel was generous enough to send us as I help them promote the launch of these new games. I'm also giving away a prize package of all 4 games valued at $96 to one lucky Classy Mommy reader. Enter below to win.

Whac-a-Mole Ages 4+ $22.00
This take on the classic arcade and amusement game will appeal to people of all ages - and they’ll probably get into a frenzied sweat trying to beat down the Moles who keep lighting up during about 45 seconds of game play. I like how this game can be played with 1 player only and has both an easy and more competitive setting. From the “Mom” perspective, Whac-a-Mole was my personal favorite game to play as I found it such addictive fun. And I’m the competitive type so I really enjoyed trying to beat my own score again and again. Mackenzie liked the fast paced action of this game and I was impressed with her ability to perfectly play Whac-a-Mole as she held her little mallet to beat down the Moleys.

Uno Moo! Ages 3+ $19.99

Everybody loves Uno and this game is a spin off of the classic designed with young kids in mind. Playing cards are replaced by adorable animal figurines in Uno Moo that Mattel research shows are far easier for tiny little hands to grip and hold. The object of the game is to get all your animal figures into the Red Barn first. Uno Moo helps kids practice matching colors and animals during game play. I love the design of using figures instead of cards for Uno Moo since a stack of cards can be boring for young kids - not to mention holding a hand of cards is a physically impossible task for a 3 or 4 year old. If you have you ever tried to play Go Fish with a 3 year old you know what I’m talking about! Uno Moo has become a quick favorite in our household as my preschooler is really getting into games. Mackenzie requests we play it again and again. Even little Kyle at 21 months, who is under age for real game play, is thrilled with the animal figures and loves putting them in and out of the barn as he watches us play. He does his best to help us get the animals into the Barn and when we make a match he is quick to say “Bye Bye Moo!” or “Bye Bye Baa Baa” as we put a cow or sheep into the barn. He even carries the little barn full of figures around the house!

Saucer Scramble Ages 5+ $23.99

Board games are certainly fun, but sometimes the little ones need to get moving! For little bundles of energy like our little Kyle, Saucer Scramble is right up their alley.

Little “alien” saucer discs, about the size of a silver dollar, get launched into the air where they float for a few seconds. Each player gets a scooper to try to catch them. There are few different ways to play the game, but for Kyle and Kenzie, we had plenty of fun just trying to catch them. Somehow, the game for us morphed into trying to catching the saucers, which then became our make-believe food that we had to stash away for the winter. Not exactly the rules that Mattel had in mind, but my kids loved it.

Electronic Toss Across Ages 5+ $29.99
Electronic Toss Across will get you moving, throwing and jumping as this spin off of Tic-Tac-Toe can be played 8 different ways. The electronic game board can be used on the floor or hung on the wall. It lights up and makes sounds during game play and you can program it for single player or multi-player games. Players toss bean bags to hit their "electronic" pod target for games like Darts, Tic-Tac-Toe, aim for the 4 corners, and more. My kids were a little young to aim perfectly for this game according to the rules compared to their ability to play the above games, but tossing, throwing, and shaking bean bags is generally always exciting and appealing for the little tykes so they still enjoyed their own version of fun.

Disclosure: During the period of October - November 30, 2009, I'm working with Mattel on the launch of their new line of games targeted towards pre-schoolers. All opinions are my own honest thoughts and experiences with these products.

Little Debbie Cupcake Car

How cute is this cupcake car? Little Debbie will be driving across the country in this cupcake car in celebration of their Share-a-Thon event where they will be giving away 1 Million cupcakes and lots of other prizes.

The tour starts in D.C. this week and the cupcake car will hit Philly on Tuesday where they'll pick me up to go for a ride for a few hours with the team. Mom Bloggers get to do some pretty cool things nowadays as we move into "experience marketing" and now I'll be able to add riding in the Little Debbie Cupcake Car to my list of life adventures. I'm not sure where exactly we'll be stopping but I do know that I'll be eating lots of cupcakes and hopefully giving a bunch away too. If I find out our local stops, I'll be sure to tweet, facebook, and send out the word in case anyone is anxious to see the Little Debbie Cupcake Car in real life.

I think my nearly 4 year old daughter will be very impressed and she'll be requesting we trade in our vehicle for a cupcake car as soon as possible!

Weil Baby BPA Free Products & Giveaway

Remember Dr. Andrew Weil? Well now, he's launched a line of more natural and BPA free baby products -think nurser bottles, silicone nipples, silicone pacifiers, bottle brushes, etc. We're giving a $50 set away to one lucky reader.

We couldn't test these out per say since my kids are off the binky and the bottle, but they looked excellent in the sense of being sleek and modern especially given they are coupled with the non toxic & BPA free qualities Mom want for their kids. I seriously wish I knew about the BPA issues when my children were tiny babies. They were primarily breastfed, but both had their fair share of BPA contaminated baby bottles.

You can visit the Weil Baby site to print a $5 off coupon here. Weil Baby products are now sold online and in select Babies R Us stores too.

As for what else is special about the Weil Baby line, it looks like the Carbon Footprint of this company is meant to be minimal. I took this info directly off the website:
"All Weil Baby products are made of the highest quality materials with our partners and affiliates right here in the USA. We're the only major baby bottle company that manufactures everything in America.
This means our carbon footprint is minimal. No overseas shipping reduces carbon emissions and prevents the promotion of questionable work environments and fair trade issues.

Our products are always BPA FREE and nontoxic.

Additionally, our packaging is made with 100% recycled paper. Our window box is made of PET, without glue, to retain 100% recyclability and our insert shell is made of a revolutionary new biodegradable material called BioMax.™

Because our products are made in the USA, we can offer moms and their babies the confidence and safety of complete lot number traceability and accountability, making Weil Baby the only major feeding product company offering this degree of quality assurance."
We're giving away a $50 set to 1 lucky reader. Enter to win by:
